Sweet dreams during National Ice Cream Month

Whether it is served in a cone or a bowl if possible a big one, with toppings or without, or right out of the carton, I just cannot pass it up. I have been an ice cream-lover as long as I can remember.

It has to be in my genes, My grandma loved the frozen creamy stuff, and though she died when I was quite young, I still remember making trips to her much loved ice cream shop in Chicago. We had each have a cone piled high with our preferred flavors. When she would come to our house for a visit, we had sit beside each other as we ate our bedtime treat of a single scoop of plain old vanilla ice cream. She said it would help me fall right to sleep and I had had sweet dreams. I still like to eat ice cream before bedtime.

July is National Ice Cream Month I determined to celebrate by creating my own ice cream dessert using some of my favorite flavors. Mocha Fudge Sweet Dreams Pie is fashioned after Mississippi Mud, a fudge-topped coffee ice cream pie I keep in mind having years ago at a restaurant we used to frequent. This one, though, is a little like eating an Almond Joy while sip a cup of coffee.

Ice Cream Fun

The elegant portal to nowhere has turn into a sweet path to the belly.

Such thoughts have been entertained normally in the past few weeks near Second and Locust streets, where the one-time entryway to a fancy early 20th century apartment building has been changed into Chilly Willy's Ice Cream.

Customers like the ice cream, which includes the only soft-serve in the immediate downtown area, according to Yvonne Sauble, general manager.

But many look past the tubs of cookies 'n' cream and strawberry-cheesecake-flavored ice cream and savor the architectural riddles posed by the building. For years, it stood only as a narrow and idle wedge of brownstone and brick.

Connie Aclin: Savor the flavor of fresh corn

Glancing across roadside fields in north Louisiana, you can see tassels on cornstalks waving, a signal that there will be abundance of corn ears accessible at local farmers markets and grocery stores. That's good news for the millions of Americans who will celebrate this Independence Day with fireworks and cookouts that take in grilled corn on the cob.

Sweet corn is a preferred vegetable. Whether you prefer to eat the kernels directly from the cob or scrape them off and make creamed corn like grandmothers, you will savor the flavor of fresh corn.

High-quality quality corn on the cob is tender and sweet. Kernels may be yellow, white or a mixture. When you buy fresh corn on the cob, look for this secret code of quality:

Kernels that are plump, but not too large, consistently spaced and cover the cob well.
