Starbucks and Unilever team up over ice cream

Starbucks is putting the marketing power of Unilever behind its coffee-flavored ice cream.

Starbucks Corp. and Unilever said Monday that they have an exclusive licensing agreement to market and distribute Starbucks ice cream in the U.S. and Canada.

The ice cream market in both countries is worth about $17 billion, Unilever estimates.

Unilever already markets brands including Ben & Jerry's, Breyers, Good Humor, Klondike and Popsicle. Its annual revenue from ice cream is more than $6 billion.

Starbucks ice cream is not new -- it first arrived in 1996. It's made with Arabica coffee and sold in grocery stores. It's now sold in seven flavors, not counting the ice cream bars. Starbucks says the Unilever deal may spark new flavors.

The ice cream is not sold in Starbucks cafes, and the company does not plan to sell it any time soon -- most stores do not have freezers, spokesman Alan Hilowitz said.

Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream Inc. had been marketing Starbucks ice cream previously.

Unilever sells all kinds of products around the globe. It was formed in 1930 when British soap maker Lever Brothers merged with Dutch margarine company Margarine Unie.

Starbucks and Unilever are not strangers. Unilever and PepsiCo have a joint venture called the Pepsi/Lipton Tea Partnership. Starbucks works with that partnership to distribute Starbucks' ready-to-drink Tazo teas.

"Really, I think both of these (the ice cream and Tazo tea partnerships) really show that our consumer products group is a very important part of our business," Hilowitz said. "It's successful -- it's growing. We're continuing to do things and innovate and bring products to our customers outside of retail stores."

Starbucks would not disclose the value of the deal.

Short 'n Sweet Strawberry Shortcake is guilt-free

Strawberries + pound cake + ice cream = good times. Add a little whipped cream and strawberry sauce, and you have a -- believe it or not -- guilt-free dessert.

Short 'n Sweet Strawberry Shortcake

1 shortcake dessert shell (like a Hostess Shortcake Dessert Cup)

1/3 cup sliced strawberries

1/3 cup fat-free vanilla ice cream

2 tablespoons fat-free whipped topping

1 tablespoon sugar-free strawberry preserves

Mix the preserves with 1/2 tablespoon hot water to make a strawberry sauce, and then set aside.

Place about one-third of the sliced strawberries in the center of the shortcake. Top with the ice cream. Then, place another third of the strawberries on top of the ice cream.

Drizzle the strawberry syrup over the top. Then squirt your dessert with the whipped topping and top with the remaining strawberries.

Makes 1 serving (entire recipe) with 190 calories, 2 grams fat, 180 mg sodium, 42 grams carbohydrates, 3 grams fiber, 22 grams sugar, 4 grams protein. Weight Watcher Points: 3.

Biz Buzz: New Nipomo shop’s ice cream features Mexican recipes

A Mexican-born local entrepreneur is bringing a taste of his homeland to Nipomo.

Bernardino Echeverría, 28, opened La Auténtica Michoacana about three months ago at 530 W. Tefft St.

A snack shop, the store in the Vons shopping center features ice cream and Mexican ice favorites with flavors that come from traditional Mexican recipes.

The ice cream and ice favorites, called “paletas” in Spanish, cost between $1.50 and $2.50 and include such flavors as tamarindo (made from a tropical fruit), pepino con chile (cucumber with chile powder), cantaloupe, guava and chongo (cheese).

In all, the shop has about 60 flavors for its paletas — including traditional American favorites such as chocolate, strawberry and vanilla.
Echeverría comes from a line of ice cream producers. Family members own seven shops in California, including his sister Marta’s business in Paso Robles.

“This type of store has a very strong tradition where I’m from in Mexico,” Echeverría said. “In fact, there is a place called Tocumbo where they have a paleta fair and people bring paletas from all over to try. There is a lot of history with that.”

His idea was to create a place where people can get an ice cream treat or a snack, like nachos. The store doesn’t sell full meals.
About 60 percent of customers are Hispanic and the other 40 are of other ethnicities, primarily white, Echeverría said.

By day, Echeverría works in the construction industry. When he is on a job, he comes to the shop about 4:30 p. m. and stays until closing at 9 p. m.

The store is open 10 a. m. to 9 p. m. seven days a week and when he’s not working construction, Echeverría’s often there all day.

Fresh mango elevates an ice cream float

Ice cream and soda pop are always a good pleasure. Even in the wintry weather, a float can still hit the spot. As a CFOer, enjoying a float with a cola or a ginger ale, or even a strawberry soda, is a juicy option.

I decided to switch it up and attempt a float with a little fruit with the usual soda and ice cream. I thought mango ice cream would be tough to find, but I actually saw it in a few stores (Western Market in Ferndale and Kroger in Troy).

This recipe is a one-person float, but it was so good that I actually made it two times and enjoyed two floats in one afternoon. I know that's a little voracious, but hey, who cares? I'm a CFOer and if I didn't share with you that I drank two floats, nobody would ever know.
